Hello Wood Turners!

My father-in-law is a wood turner and makes segmented bowls. One of his most time consuming and error prone tasks in making these bowls is the sanding of the rings after the segments have been glued together. With the mounting, smoothing and doing it all again on the other side, this process takes him many hours to accomplish.

I have been running his segmented rings through my industrial sander for a couple of months now. He simply loads a Pre-Paid box from U.S.P.S. with as many rings as will fit, and sends it off to me. I then sand them flat using an 80 grit paper and ship them back to him. Because of the delicate nature of these rings, I take my time and make sure there are no “catches” to damage his work. He manages to nest enough rings to complete 2 bowls in these boxes.

I would like to offer the same service to you. I charge $42.00 per box (whatever you can fit into it), plus $9.60 for the return postage. The rings would need to be sent to me in a U.S.P.S. box for a cost of $8.95. The total cost to you would be $60.55.

 

The boxes have an inside measurement of 13.625" x 11.875" x 3.375".

My father-in-law finds that the service is well worth the expense, considering the amount of time it takes to sand the rings himself. He figures after he spends 6+ hours on sanding the rings for 2 bowls, the cost of sending them to me is only $10.00 per hour. This way he can spend more time on his lathe, making the pieces he loves to make, instead of doing the time consuming job of sanding them himself.

Even if some of your members want to combine their work, I would be glad to get them ready for you. It takes less than 2 days for me to sand them and get them into the mail.
